Video, 4′ 47″
Barthes & The Cranberries creates a hybrid text about longing and desire, formed by alternating between an excerpt from theorist Roland Barthes’ “A Lover’s Discourse” and the lyrics from The Cranberries song “When You’re Gone.” As the music plays, the text scrolls over the screen in a style reminiscent of a karaoke video. Behind the scrolling words a low-fi video shows the faceless body of a woman dancing seductively alone in her room. Barthes & The Cranberries considers how cultural narratives of desire and romance inform the way the body of the lover performs, mimics, perceives and ultimately experiences the other.
