By the late 1990s, the company was buckling under increasing pressure by Dell, HP, and other personal computer brands. Apple’s Macintosh market share was in the low single digits. The company looked like a goner. Industry analysts declared that Apple had to begin competing in the personal computing market or become irrelevant. That’s when Steve Jobs came back in as CEO. The first tactic Jobs used to implement his plan to regain Apple’s stature in the marketplace was to stop the market share bleeding by launching new products with flamboyant design and a new operating system.

They quickly built market share and the stock did very well, prompting outside financial analysts and investors to heap lots of praise on Apple’s new leadership. In addition to the excitement caused by the initial stock surge, observers raved about the company’s creative strategy. But these outsiders failed to grasp that the new team was simply cashing in on the success built by Steve Jobs.
