In the first of a series of investigations aimed at socially validating the effects of behavioral treatment of children with autism, Schreibman, Koegel, Mills, and Burke (1981) sought to determine the relationship between objective, observational measures of pre-post treatment change in the children and the subjective judgments of change formed of those children by untrained, naive observers.

First, at the onset of the extinction procedure there will be a temporary increase in the strength of the behavior (called an extinction "burst") as the child tries harder to reinstate the reinforcement. But after this temporary increase the behavior will decrease. Second, with extinction the behavior does not decrease immediately, but does so gradually. Lovaas and Simmons (1969) clearly demonstrated the effectiveness of extinction to decrease SIB.

To relate this to our discussion above, we can manipulate the antecedents (known as discriminative stimuli), or we can manipulate the consequences. Although the majority of the established behavioral techniques focus on the alteration of consequent events, there is a growing body of very important literature addressing the alteration of antecedents. We will address both of these approaches.
