This excerpt also underscores the significance of bodybuilders’ bodies as targets, which are constantly under surveillance and highly disciplined: Carl: Well, bodybuilding you hit specific muscles and you train to build them like, your shoulders, traps [trapezius muscles located on the upper back], or whatever.

The oldest respondent to give their age was 53, the youngest 18. Only 16 per cent (N=11) stated they were ‘officially’ unemployed. They write that results published from their previous study, supporting this conceptualisation, were widely quoted in the popular press. This, in turn, elicited inquiries from lawyers and attorneys, each describing an individual who had apparently committed a violent crime while taking steroids. After following up three of these cases, Pope and Katz (1990) present case reports supporting their hypothesis that steroids exert activational effects causing aggressive violence. Concerning their view that steroids represent the principle aetiology for the psychiatric symptoms and criminal behaviour described, they write: ‘These three cases strongly suggest that anabolic steroids may cause some law-abiding and psychiatrically asymptomatic individuals to develop manic and psychotic symptoms, culminating occasionally in violent crimes’ (1990: 30).
